Return 95 frozen vehicles before May 3 - EOCO to car dealerships, individuals
EOCO, today, April 18, published a list of the vehicles suspected to have been stolen from the United States and Canada.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has asked car dealerships and individuals in possession of 95 frozen vehicles, to return them as well as accompanying documents by May 3, 2023.
EOCO, today, April 18, published a list of the vehicles suspected to have been stolen from the United States and Canada.
The request by EOCO also comes about two months after it secured a court order, in February, allowing the office to freeze the vehicles, pursuant to section 33 of the Economic and Organised Crime Act, 2010 (Act 804).
“Kindly note that after 3rd May, 2023, EOCO will take steps to have those vehicles confiscated in accordance with the law,” the statement further noted.
Background
In December 2022, EOCO together with a team of FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, retrieved 37 luxury vehicles suspected to have been stolen from garages in Accra.
This was then followed by a court order in February, allowing it to seize 95 more of the said vehicles.
According to EOCO, information gathered indicated that about 400 luxury vehicles suspected to have been obtained through crime, were shipped from the US and Canada into the country.
