The Judicial Service has inaugurated two new district courts in Zuarungu and Pusiga respectively in the Upper East Region.

The new courts would serve as “a beacon of hope," Chief Justice Torkornoo said in a speech read on her behalf, as hitherto, residents could only access legal services at the Bawku District Court and other adjoining districts.

“As we inaugurate the courts, we carry forward the torch of this vision through the provision of dedicated space where justice can be served with proximity, efficiency and a commitment to the welfare of all involved parties," Justice Torkornoo said.

“It is your collective responsibility to ensure that the courts stand the test of time by providing a conducive environment for the dispensation of justice for generations to come,” she admonished further.

A 100 courts project

In March of 2022, the government pledged to provide 100 courthouses and accompanying residences for judges and magistrates across the country.

The project's focus was to bridge the access to justice gap through court infrastructure in various districts across Ghana.

Of the lot, these included a new High Court at Sowutuom, in the Ga-Central Municipality, a court facility at the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region, a High court with additional responsibility as a child-friendly gender-based violence Circuit court in Nalerigu, the regional capital of the North-East Region, a Circuit court at Dansoman in Accra, the Kasoa High Court, and many others.

The highlight of these perhaps was the inauguration of the new Court of Appeal complex in Kumasi, together with twenty (20) townhouses and a guesthouse to serve as a permanent residence for Justices of the Court of Appeal serving the northern sector of the country.
