We find the same unfortunate exercise of the General Legal Council’s mandate to dictate legal education policy in the country.

The National Union of Ghana Students has commented on the signing of the undertaking document being required of prospective students of the Ghana School of law before sitting for this year’s entrance exams scheduled for September.

The Union notes that the demand is unconscionable and violates the rule of law and natural justice thus will not spare any necessary means to resist it.

Check out the full statement;

We find the demand of the General Legal Council on students as unconscionable and violates the rule of law and natural justice that are the pillars of our democracy. These are conditions no student should have to contend with while pursuing an education and profession.

We find the same unfortunate exercise of the General Legal Council’s mandate to dictate legal education policy in the country. It echoes that the Council intends to continue to operate in an opaque manner without the desire to be held accountable. This itself is antithetical to the ethos of the profession it is responsible for shaping.

Access to legal education in Ghana continues to be exclusive and built with abnormal barriers to entry. This phenomenon poses many threats to our country, which has a woeful lawyer-to-population ratio. We must, by all means, commit to correcting this structure rather than entrenching it.

The National Union of Ghana Students will not stand for this and will ensure that students will sit the examination without having to submit to a forfeiture of their rights as guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

We urge all students to remain steadfast in their preparations for the examination whilst the leadership of the union works with other well-meaning stakeholders to remedy the situation.

The National Union of Ghana Students remains committed to persistent protection of the welfare and interests of all students in the country, and will NOT SPARE ANY NECESSARY MEANS TO RESIST THIS.
