The Ministry of National Security has written to security agencies about the suspicious activity of a group in the Bunkpurugu/Nankpanduri district in the North East Region, and Garu district of the Upper East Region.

According to the letter sighted by Dennislaw News and dated June 3, 2022, intelligence gathered by the Ministry indicates that the group operates along a mountainous area within the districts.

“That the group was reportedly sighted aboard motorbikes dressed in apparels that hid their faces and headed for the mountainous area in the Garu district,” parts of the letter signed by the National Security Coordinator, Major-General Francis Adu-Amanfoh (RTD) read.

He has therefore requested urgent action from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service.

Ghana has been found to be at risk of extremist attacks or recruitment according to a recent report by the West African Center for Counter-Extremism.

The report noted that with over 352 unresolved chieftaincy conflicts and as neighboring countries like Burkina Faso, Togo, Ivory Coast were already grappling with terrorist violence, Ghana stood at high risk.

The government just last month launched a citizen awareness campaign dubbed ‘See Something, Say Something’ to encourage people to report suspicious acts of terrorism.
