Eastern Region: Chief Justice inaugurates district court at Ayensuano
While noting that efforts are being made to increase the quality of justice through infrastructure, she added that the Judicial Service is “working hard” at instilling higher ethical standards in its officers
The Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo has inaugurated a district court at Ayensuano, in the Eastern Region, as part of the 100 courts project being executed by the government.
While noting that efforts are being made to increase the quality of justice through infrastructure, she added that the Judicial Service is “working hard” at instilling higher ethical standards in its officers.
“Through training and Codes of Conduct, we are demanding accountable service, independence from conflict of interest, and integrity from all our officers around the country."
Aside other offices, the district court has also a dedicated office for the much-advocated Court Connected ADR, equipped with a Direct Transcription System to facilitate the adjudication process.
“As Ghana has grown as a society, regulations have been increasingly crafted to assist the less privileged in society to access justice through less complex rules of Court, automation of court services and provision of ADR facilities.
“Through the court, we will be able to ensure that fewer people contemplate the use of extra-judicial avenues of seeking redress and resolving disputes,” she added.
Efforts to ensure access to justice through court infrastructure in various districts stepped up since last year with the inauguration of newly built court edifices. Of the lot, these included a new High Court at Sowutuom, in the Ga-Central Municipality, a court facility at the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region, a High court with additional responsibility as a child-friendly gender-based violence Circuit court in Nalerigu, the regional capital of the North-East Region
This year so far has seen the commissioning of a Circuit court at Dansoman in Accra, the Kasoa High Court, two courts at Juaso and Bompata, both in the Asante-Akim Municipality, a Circuit Court at Juaben in the Ashanti Region, a new district court at Bonwire in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region, a circuit court at Kluma Dorfor, the North-Tongu district of the Volta Region, and others.
The highlight of these perhaps was the inauguration of the new Court of Appeal complex in Kumasi, together with twenty (20) townhouses and a guesthouse to serve as permanent residence for Justices of the Court of Appeal serving the northern sector of the country.
In March of 2022, the government pledged to provide 100 courthouses and accompanying residences for judges and magistrates across the country.
