Businessman remanded for allegedly defrauding lawyer

An Accra Circuit has remanded into prison custody, a supposed businessman, 47-year-old Mahmoud Odaymat for allegedly defrauding a lawyer, Geoffrey Howard Quist in 2019.

According to the prosecution team led by Deputy Police Superintendent Augustus Yirenkyi, the accused had passed himself off as an employee of the Dutch Embassy and approached Mr. Howard Quist, promising to secure a vehicle from the embassy.
Mr. Howard Quist is said to have paid GHC 32, 000 for the purchase of a Land Rover Jeep, an item Mahmoud Odaymat promised to deliver in a week.
In court, lawyers for the accused prayed for bail, however, the prosecution opposed it, arguing that since the accused was a foreigner, he posed a flight risk.
Charged with defrauding by false pretense, he pleaded not guilty.
The court presided over by Emmanuel Essandoh remanded the accused to the Ankaful Prison and adjourned the case to July 27, 2022.
