The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) is warning the public about the sharing of WhatsApp verification codes with malicious actors, which leads to the takeover of their accounts.

The Authority has, however, revealed that it has received over 64 cases of such incidents since April this year.

In a public alert, the CSA notes that these malicious actors, after compromising an existing WhatsApp group, begin to target the group members as well.

It adds that after this, these actors then craft persuasive messages designed to lure their targets to disclose their verification codes.

The CSA has thus recommended that the public treat their verification codes like passwords by keeping them confidential.

Again, the authority wants WhatsApp users to enable two-step verification as an extra layer to keep their accounts.

Additionally, users are advised to verify any unexpected messages requesting their verification codes.

Finally, the CSA wants all to share with and educate friends and family on the activities of these actors.
