UTAG pledges to respond to NLC injunction

The University Teachers Association of Ghana has revealed that it is consulting with its legal team to provide an appropriate reaction to the injunction secured against it by the National Labor Commission.

A news report filed by Citi News indicates that UTAG received the news of the injunction only after completing its nationwide consultations with members of the association. As a result, the leadership of the association resolved not to call off the strike until government satisfy their demands.

The association has since Monday, August 2, 2021, ceased to offer its services, over what it describes as poor service conditions. According to UTAG, the 2012 Single Spine package which put entry-level lecturers on a salary of $2,084 per month had not been implemented. Senior staffers also demanded the computation and release of their tier 2 Pension in arrears with interest.

Dennislaw News reported on August 6, 2021 that the National Labor Commission had secured an ex-parte injunction at the Accra High Court to restrain UTAG from continuing its strike action.

However, the UTAG secretary, Dr. Eric Abavara who spoke to Citi News indicated that the association will respond appropriately after consulting with its lawyers.

“We have seen the ex-parte motion on social media, and we have consulted our lawyers on same, and they will be working on it accordingly. The emergency meetings were held before the release of the motion, but our lawyers are studying it and will respond appropriately.”
