The Appellate Division of a New York Court is launching a task force to explore the role artificial intelligence might play in appellate and trial courts.

“The legal profession is not immune to the rapid evolution that is taking place in the field of artificial intelligence,” said Presiding Justice Hector LaSalle in a statement. “As artificial intelligence technology rapidly advances, it is imperative for the courts to be prepared.”

Task force members will meet with various experts in the field of AI and subsequently propose recommendations as to how the technology can be best used by the appellate and trial courts, according to the Office of Court Administration. The group is also tasked with identifying the possible risks and dangers of incorporating the technology in the court system.

“I am delighted that these well-respected and esteemed professionals have agreed to take part in this important Task Force,” LaSalle stated. “I am certain that their analysis and report will be instrumental in assisting the courts of the Second Department to prepare for the changes and challenges that artificial intelligence will bring to the legal profession.”
