The Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in a statement says it has imposed a ban on the riding of motorbikes in the Bawku Municipality and its environs.

The directive, according to the Security Council, follows an examination of the security situation in Bawku.

The ban however does not include motor tricycles, the Security Council said.

“The ban affects both sexes. REGSEC requests that MUSEC enforces this directive with the urgency that it deserves until further notice,” the statement read.

On Sunday, January 23, 2022, two persons were shot dead, while eight others were wounded, when unknown gunmen attacked persons engaged in CFA Franc trading at Daduri, a suburb of Bawku.

A police officer with the Paga Police Station was also shot dead on Sunday when she paid a visit to her colleague, Constable Erasmus Enkson of the Bawku Division.

With a heightened security situation, Bawku has been on curfew since November 2021.

The Security Council in a number of measures has also banned the wearing of smock and pillion riding involving men.
