The Bono-East Regional Minister, Kwasi Adu Gyan, has stated that in the first quarter of 2022, he would hold discussions with the Director of Prisons, to consider possibilities of an upgrade at the Yeji Prison Camp.

He said the Prison Camp only needed an additional 10 per cent of infrastructure.

“They have the infrastructure, just about 10 per cent of so of additional infrastructure that they need. Immediately, this year, first quarter, I’m gonna take it up with the Director of Prisons in Accra, for us to discuss the possibility,” the Minister said in an interview.

He noted with concern that when convicts are sentenced to the Yeji Prison Camp, they are first transported through the Sunyani Central Prison or the Kumasi Central Prison, a process that also makes it expensive or costly for government.

“You know it’s very expensive, it’s very costly. Even, I’m made to understand that when somebody receives a sentence here in Yeji, he has to be transported through Sunyani or Kumasi, before he is brought here. When they are released, the same thing. It’s very expensive for the government and I think it’s also hectic for the officers here,” he explained.

“So it is a right thing to do, to upgrade this prison into a status that would give them that kind of autonomy, to be able to perform some of these services without going through Sunyani or Kumasi.”
