A newly recruited Ugandan Magistrate has been remanded after he was arrested at the country's Lira Law Development Centre for impersonating and allegedly sitting an exam for his girlfriend, reports local media.

Musa Amaari Ssemongerere was among 87 magistrates appointed by the country's Judicial Commission on July 13.

He was arrested on Wednesday, July 26 sitting an exam for Irene Mutonyi, and has since been charged with impersonation, forgery, and uttering a false document.

According to prosecutors, Ssemongerere entered the law center using a fake Identity card and documents bearing an alias, Antony Mukisa, allegedly signed by the Academic Registrar.

"We have since determined that the said 'Mukisa Anthony' is actually Semwogerere Ammaari Musa, a recently appointed Magistrate Grade 1 in the Uganda Judiciary. We were able to check with our system and it confirmed that indeed he was not a student at the Bar Course," Herbert Walusimbi, a senior Legal officer is quoted to have told Ugandland publication NilePost.

The country's Judicial body has also revoked his appointment, saying in a statement that judicial officials ought to conduct themselves with integrity.
