They are jokers-Sam Okudzeto describes Dafeamekpor, Sosu for seeking CJ’s removal from the GLC
So I don’t see how the qualified lawyer is going to appear before the court and you say that those for who we are going to appear before do not have any power of control over their training, or education. It’s a joke.
A renowned legal practitioner and a former President of the Ghana Bar Association(GBA), Sam Okudzeto has described two Minority MPs, Nelson Dafeamekpor and Francis Xavier Sosu as jokers for seeking the removal of the Chief Justice from the General Legal Council.
The two minority Members of Parliament, who are MPs for South Dayi and Madina Constituencies respectively have presented a Private Members Bill that seeks to reform Legal Education in the Country.
In a Memo to the Clerk of Parliament, the Members of Parliament are requesting the amendment of the Legal Professions Act, 1960(Act 32), to exclude the Chief Justice as well as other Justices of the Supreme Court from the General Legal Council(GLC).
According to them, the Bill will redefine the functions of the GLC and provide for reforms in Legal Education such that accredited Faculties of Law with the requisite facilities would be licensed to run professional law courses.
Moreover, this will provide the discipline of lawyers and related matters to give effect to Article 37(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
However, in an interview with Asaase Radio, Mr. Okudzeto described the Legal Reforms Bill submitted by the two MPs as a big joke and wondered how one can make a demand as seeking judges whom the lawyers appear before, to be barred from their training.
He further challenged the understanding of the two MPs relative to the law.
“If they (the two MPs) are lawyers, then their understanding of the law leaves a lot of question. I have been a member of the disciplinary committee for several years, I am still there… if I tell you the number of complaints that keep coming there,” he indicated.
“So I don’t see how the qualified lawyer is going to appear before the court and you say that those for who we are going to appear before do not have any power of control over their training, or education. It’s a joke. I must confess that they are jokers and I don’t know who they are and I don’t want to know who they are,” he ended..
