The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Angel Carbonu is worried the increasing reports of examination malpractice may compel tertiary education units in the country to demand that prospective students write entrance exams before they are admitted.

He observed that in recent times, there have been lots of reports of exam questions leaking ahead of time. These examinations have typically included the Basic Education Certificate Examination as well as the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination.

He further bemoaned the seeming inability of the examination management body, the West African Examination Council in handling the crisis, noting that it may be because the malpractices “is getting more systemized and complicated”.

Mr. Carbonu made these observations on Accra-based Citi TV.

“[This leakages] put the integrity and the sanctity of certifications in question… When the universities in Ghana begin to question the validity and sanctity of our exam, I will not be surprised that in the near future the various councils of the universities will take a decision where students write entrance exam before they get into the universities,” he said.

The NAGRAT President subsequently quizzed why WAEC has not taken into account, the possibility of a “sophisticated technology” operating outside its remit.

In recent times, groups such as the Africa Education Watch have blamed WAEC for not commanding absolute control over the situation, although WAEC has consistently denied the validity of these claims.
