The Wenchi High Court has dismissed some requests for subpoenas against the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, and Alhaji Fuseini Awinaba, the Regional Crime Officer, Bono East in the ongoing Techiman-South election petition.

This comes on the back of a suit filed by the 2020 Techiman South National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Dr. Christopher Beyere Baasongti, in which he asked the court to subpoena EC Chair, Jean Mensa, and others to appear before it for cross-examinations.

The suit in general seeks to quash the declaration of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah as Techiman South MP, and declare Dr. Christopher Beyere Baasongti as the legitimate winner of the Techiman-South parliamentary elections.

“What is the relevance of that subpoena? We are pursuing a civil case, so what are all these subpoenas about? The EC chair has nominated somebody to represent the organization and so why subpoena her to come and testify when she wasn’t even at the polling station or the constituency in Techiman South during the election. For us and as the judge affirmed, it was all irrelevant,” said Richard Asamoah, a witness to first respondent Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah who spoke to the media.

Both the petitioner and the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, were in court but declined to speak to the media.

The case has further been adjourned to April 14, 2022.
