The Food and Drugs Authority(FDA) in partnership with the Judicial Service of Ghana is to set up special courts to deal with cases relating to the sale of substandard and falsified (SF) medical products in Ghana.

According to the Authority, this move is to help regulate and promote the sale of medicines in Ghana.
This was made known by the Head of Surveillance of the FDA, Mr.Vigil Edward Prah-Ashun at a one-day stakeholders’ conference in Ho in the Volta Region.

The Conference was a part of a collaboration between the FDA and the World Health Organization(FDA) to create awareness on the dangers of Substandard and falsified medicines in the Country.

Mr.Prah indicated that the special courts will speedily try cases of this nature as a result of the slow trial in the main courts relative to such cases.

Furthermore, he indicated that the expeditious trial of such cases will enable people found liable to be punished early enough to deter others from engaging in such illegal businesses.
“Very soon, these special courts will be established to facilitate our work in the fight against the sale of SF medicines,” he said.

This move has become necessary, following a July 2018 survey by the Food and Drugs Authority(FDA) in partnership with the Promoting Quality of Medicines (PQM) programme, which discovered the prevalence of SF medicines in the country.
