Soldier arrested over shooting stunt at ANC Mall could be dismissed or demoted

Flt Sergeant Nicholas Owusu Frimpong, the military officer who was arrested for firing gunshots into the sky at the ANC Mall on New Year’s Eve may face a reduction in rank or dismissal from the Ghana Armed forces if found guilty.

The Soldier is currently detained by the Military Police while investigations continue.

“It ranges from a reduction in rank to even dismissal, that is the highest. Nobody will be shielded,” Acting Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Armed Forces, Commander Andy La-Anyane told Joy News.

“Disciplinary action might be taken and we will communicate the actions to the general public,” he said.

The Soldier was arrested after a video that went viral showed him firing gunshots into the sky, at the ANC Mall.

The Police said the suspect’s actions amount to crime, under Section 209 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).

Commander Andy La-Anyane also added that the Military Police is additionally investigating the second person seen in the video supposedly hugging the soldier.

“The investigations will be able to determine who the person is, what relationship he has with a person with a military person, whether he’s even a military person… [he] may be a friend, maybe somebody who is just passing by, but if he is identified as somebody who is also a member of the military, we will also take it up.”
