Senior staffers, FUSSAG call off strike
UTAG has further hinted that it would go to court over the injunction secured by the NLC last week.
Senior Staffers of public universities in Ghana have been directed to return to work, in a notice filed by the National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG).
The notice further directs members of the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association (FUSSAG) to also suspend the current strike action.
These directives are contained in a letter addressed to the Executive Secretary of the National Labor Commission, in which SSA-UoG indicates that the decision “follows the National Labour Commission’s ruling on August 6, 2021, and various interventions made by the Hon. Minister(s) of Education… Employment and Labor Relations, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.”
The National Chairman of the Senior staff association, Zakaria Mohammed has subsequently noted that deliberations will continue with the government and other stakeholders for their demands of equity in salaries to be met.
“We will continue to engage faithfully with government and other relevant stakeholders in our fight for justice, fairness, and equity in the salaries and allowances administration of our members.”
UTAG Defiance
Meanwhile, the University Teachers Association of Ghana is continuing their strike action, noting that they would not allow themselves to be bullied by the government into returning to the lecture halls when their demands have not been met.
The Head of Psychology Department at the University of Ghana, Prof. Joseph Osafo, for instance, has indicated that “the government’s muscular response doesn’t help.”
A political science lecturer also at the University of Ghana, Dr. Seidu Alidu has cautioned that the National Labor Commission “should try as much as possible to be an impartial arbiter. They should first try as much as possible to look at the merits of the case before them”. Dr. Alidu has further warned that “if care is not taken, we risk collapsing our educational system considering the current happenings in the country with respect to the sector.
