Rise in cases of attempted suicide in Nkoranza South municipality
There is an upsurge in the cases of attempted suicide in the Nkoranza South Municipality.
This concern was expressed by the Municipal mental health coordinator of the Nkoranza South Municipal. He attributes the phenomenon to mental illness caused by marital problems, schizophrenia, alcoholism, bipolar disorders, and epilepsy among others.
According to Mr.George Kwame Osei, the municipality recorded 335 cases of attempted suicide in 2020, 24 cases in 2019, and 17 in 2018.
He further indicated that most of the suicide victims were mental patients usually placed on medications but had however defaulted.
Mr.Osei however expressed his disappointment at the inability of the National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS) to cover psychiatric medications such as risperidone, olanzapine, carbamazepine, etc.
He appealed to benevolent organizations and individuals to support the Nkoranza Health Centre with motorbikes for the nurses and health personnel to attend to emergencies in remote areas.
