The Member of Parliament(MP) for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey has been ordered by a Sekondi High Court to produce documents supporting the renunciation of her Ivorian citizenship within 10 days.

Background

The National Democratic Congress(NDC) member of parliament won the Jomoro parliamentary seat in the 2020 general election.

However, after the election, a suit was filed by the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) challenging her victory at the Sekondi High Court in the Western Regional capital.

According to Nana Obiri Boahen, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), the party filed a suit to prevent Madam Dorcas Afo Toffey from holding herself as a member of Parliament.

He further revealed in an interview with Neat FM that aside from being Ghanaian, Afo- Toffey had documents that qualify her to be a citizen of the Ivory Coast and the United States of America.

As a fallout of the above, the petitioner is making a case at the Sekondi High Court that the MP does not qualify to hold her position since she was holding an Ivorian passport at the time of her election.

Dorcas Affo-Toffey however had refuted the petitioner’s claims and told the court that she was no longer in possession of an Ivorian passport.

The court presided by Justice Dr.Richard Osei Kyere, asked for proof of her renunciation of the said Country’s citizenship for the court to inspect.

He, therefore, ordered the Member of Parliament to produce to the court within 10 days, documents supporting the renunciation of her Ivorian Citizenship.
