Police Service to pay GHC 100, 000 for failure to comply with RTI request

The Ghana Police Service has been slapped with an administrative penalty of GHC100,000 for its failure to respond to a Right to Information request by the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CRI).

The Applicant, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative had requested from the Ghana Police Service information regarding the unlawful killing and police brutality by police officers.

However, these two-fold request was not responded to by the Ghana Police Service and thus leading to the imposition of this fine which is to be paid within 14 days of failure after which an additional default penalty of 10 percent will apply on the principal sum.

The decision by the RTI, notes that such a posture by the Police Service constitutes a failure to perform its obligation underact 989 and an affront to the right of access to information as enshrined under Article 21(1)(f) of the 1992 Constitution.

The Commission also ordered the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the pieces of Information are released to the applicant not later than 14 days after the decision.
