Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has revealed that Parliament is constituting steps to pass legislation that would “nib the activities” of LGBTs in the bud.

In a letter sighted by Dennislaw News in which the Speaker was responding to a petition presented by one Emmanuel Abankwah Kesse, a political activist in the Eastern Region, the Speaker noted that LGBT and related activities are “indeed a phenomenon that should not be encouraged or accepted by our society due to its eventual negative impact on society.”

Parts of the response read, “urgent actions are being taken to pass a law to eventually nib the activities of these groups in the bud. Stakeholder consultations are also ongoing and these results will feed into a Bill that will eventually be passed into law by Parliament.”

This assurance comes barely weeks after pressures mounted on the government by pro-human rights and LGBT activists in the country to quell what was deemed as human rights abuses against some twenty-one LGBT activists who were arrested by the police and journalists in Ho.

It also follows the siting of an LGBT office in Accra early this year, which sparked various reactions and concerns on social media over Ghana’s stance on the phenomenon, with advocates pleading human rights and liberties while oppositions note that it constitutes an affront to Ghana’s cultural identities and beliefs.

Meanwhile, President Akufo Addo has already mentioned, during the installation of the 2nd Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Asante Mampong, that “it will not be under the Presidency of Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo that same-sex marriage will be legal.”

The 21 persons who were arrested in Ho have since been granted bail.
