Parliament to lay Anti-LGBT bill for the first time
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin had previously announced that Parliament was preparing itself to pass a new law that would criminalize homosexual activities in the country by the end of 2021.
Parliament is expected to read for the first time, the Private Member’s Bill dubbed the ‘Proper Human Sexual and Ghanaian Family Values Bill’ 2021.
The bill represents Ghana’s first attempts at criminalizing homosexual behaviors and all other advocacies by persons allied to the LGBTQ movement.
It has been received with mixed reactions among sections of the Ghanaian populace although it has received tremendous support from members of Parliament from both sides.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin had previously announced that Parliament was preparing itself to pass a new law that would criminalize homosexual activities in the country by the end of 2021.
He told a group of MPs and some religious organizations in June this year that “I am very clear in my mind that the Parliament of Ghana will pass this Bill [to criminalize LGBTQ]. I have gone through it and I will confirm that the Bill will be a reference point for many countries. It has gone through all the provisions of the constitutions, laws, and international obligations.”
President Akufo-Addo had also announced earlier this year that his government would not supervise an endorsement of gay rights, irrespective of international pressure that is mounted for same.
