Parliament to consider memos on anti-LGBTQI+ Bill this week

he anti-LGBTQ bill has generated debates all over the country and beyond. Initiated by eight members of Parliament, it seeks to criminalize LGBTQI+ activities and advocacy.

Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee will this week, begin considerations on memos that were submitted before it, on the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021.

The committee has so far received more than 150 memos from individuals, institutions and civil society organisations, in support of the bill or otherwise. The committee has also programmed to hear 10 petitions each week.

Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Deputy Majority Leader said because the committee would be hearing 10 petitions in a week, it implies that it would take 15 weeks to complete the exercise.

“It is important that all those who brought the memoranda are heard by the committee,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin made the announcement when he presented the Business Statement for the third week ending, Friday, November 12, 2021, to the House.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has also indicated that the House would conduct an open hearing into the bill and a vote on the bill would be done publicly.
