The National Petroleum Authority(NPA) is set to prosecute crimes committed in the oil supply chain following the grant of prosecutorial powers by the Attorney General.

The law, which was promulgated in 2020, that is E.I. 378, will enable the Authority to prosecute cases in the Petroleum downstream industry to deal with various crimes.

This was made known by the Legal Manager of the NPA, Farida Ali-Musah at a media engagement in Cape Coast.

Before coming into force of this law, the NPA had to depend on the Office of the Attorney General and the Police for the prosecution of cases.

According to Ms. Ali-Musah, this situation usually led to some cases being thrown out of court for lack of prosecution.

She further recounted that the NPA has witnessed a massive evolution since its establishment in 2005 by Act 691.

Further commenting on the various crimes to be dealt with by the Authority, she said; operating without NPA certified license, misapplication of the prescribed petroleum pricing formula, and tampering with Bulk Road Vehicle (BRV).

Also, Ms. Ali-Musah mentioned false statements, withholding material information, obstruction or interference with the investigation, and selling unmarked fuel.

She thus added that the National Petroleum Authority has begun stakeholder consultation before the start of the prosecution process.
