No need to praise NCA for restoring licenses of 133 radio stations – MFWA

The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Sulemana Braimah has insisted that the NCA’s move to reinstate the licenses of some 133 radio stations in the country is nothing to be excited about.
The National Communications Authority shut down some radio stations in May 2019, noting that they were operating without the required license.
According to the NCA at the time, these radio stations had to reapply before they could be allowed to operate. However, sections of the public deemed it as a politically motivated move.

Nonetheless, Mr. Sulemana Braimah who described the 2019 action by the NCA as “discriminatory” told Accra-based Asaase Radio that “I don’t think there’s anything to be elated about.”
According to him, “there were over a hundred that were in the same situation based on the NCA’s own data, yet, they were not shut down.”
Meanwhile, the NCA has indicated that the parties whose licenses have been approved will be required to attend “a sensitization workshop on the terms and conditions of FM radio broadcasting authorizations”.
