Nigeria: Unemployed man ordered to sweep court premises for stealing perfume

A Nigerian judge, Ishaq Hassan, has ordered a 24-year-old unemployed, Valentine Nmoye to sweep the premises of the Karu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for three hours over the theft of three perfumes worth N4,000 ($9.00) from a store.

Mr Hassan gave the order after the convict pleaded guilty to the theft and warned him to desist from committing crimes.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Olarewaju Osho, told the court that the complainant, Sadiq Ahmed of Tahalid Stores, Garki, Abuja, reported the incident at the Garki Police Station on November 3.

According to him, the complainant claimed the convict entered the store and stole three perfumes worth N4,000 ($9.00). 

Mr Osho said during the police investigation, the convict admitted to committing the offence, which is punishable under Section 287 of the country's Penal Code Law.
