The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has written to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), seeking updates on investigations regarding the 2020 election violence and alleged malpractices.

In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the party believes investigations, prosecution, and punishment of culprits would serve as deterrents to others.

“We contend that failure on the part of the Police to deal decisively with such heinous crimes portends clear dangers for Ghana’s democracy that all well-meaning Ghanaians and development partners should be concerned about,” the party also said in its statement.

In the letter also, the party tables a number of offences it is requesting the police administration to provide updates on.

These include a shooting incident that resulted in the death of one person in the Bono Region on July 14, 2021, a shooting incident involving Hon. Hawa Koomson, the arrest of Electoral Commission officers alleged to have tampered with ballot papers and the attack on civilians at the Techiman South Constituency on December 8, 2020, among others.

Below is the statement from the party.

The NDC in a separate letter has petitioned the IGP to investigate an alleged printing of one million extra ballot papers by Innolink Printing Press during the 2020 general elections.

The party claims the ballot papers were discovered by their agents who had returned to Innolink Printing press to supervise the reprinting of ballots for the Afigya Kwabre South Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

“When our agents confronted, the supervisors at Innolink, they gave all manner of incoherent answers. One claimed that it was a ‘back up’ while another lady in charge of the bindery claimed they were meant for ‘run-off. Seemingly confused, officials of Innolink could not provide any further tenable answers,” the party said in its petition.

They also noted that although officials of the Electoral Commission destroyed the said ballot papers on November 27, 2020, they still believe that some of the excess ballots were sent to the Ashanti Region before the discovery by their party agents.

In their complaint, they are asking the IGP to investigate and prosecute officials of the Electoral Commission and Innolink.

The party also attached as evidence, what they say are videos and photos of the excess ballot papers discovered at Innolink, certificates of disposal of waste ballot papers, footage from select media houses, among others.
