Four Minority Members of Parliament have filed a private members motion, seeking for a bi-partisan parliamentary committee to investigate the events that led to the death of a nursing mother in an ambulance in the Western Region.

According to reports, the deceased, Augustina Awortwe, was said to have lost her life due to a delay in the movement of the ambulance to Accra, after doctors referred her from the Holy Child Clinic at Fijai, to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

The husband of the deceased said the delay was as a result of his inability to pay GH¢600 demanded as fuel fees for the ambulance; a claim the Western Region Coordinator of the National Ambulance Service, Dr. Tawiah Tsiameh, denied.

The four MPs calling for the probe are Minority Chief Whip, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, Juaboso MP, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Nabdam MP, Mark Kurt Nawaane and Techiman North MP, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.

“That this Honourable House constitutes a bi-partisan committee to probe the circumstances leading to the death of Madam Augustina Awortwe who died in an ambulance when she was being transported from Holy Child Catholic Hospital at Fijai near Takoradi,” the motion dated February 1, 2022, said.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, also among the MPs calling for the probe, had earlier suggested that the ambulance crew be interdicted, while investigations followed.
