Legal Professions Bill: Deans of Faculties to make recommendations
Prof. Atuguba assured students, parents, and guardians, that the newly formed Conference of Law Deans will work to assuage most of the challenges faced in legal education in Ghana.
The Dean of the University of Ghana Faculty of Law, Prof. Raymond Atuguba has revealed that the Deans of the 15 Law Faculties in Ghana are studying the Legal Professions Bill 2021 in order to make recommendations.
He noted that the Deans met the Director of the Ghana School of Law at a Conference at Aburi from October 29 to 31 to discuss several pressing matters on legal education including the new bill.
“From the 29th to the 31st of October we had a conference with the Director of the Ghana School of Law to establish the Conference of Law Deans as a common platform to engaging all the Deans of the Faculties and the Director of Legal Education.”
“We discussed various issues confronting Legal Education in Ghana. So students, be rest assured that as your teachers, we will not go to sleep. The Conference of Law Deans put together seven working groups. In December this year, the conference will present concrete proposals to the Chief Justice, AG and the President for initiating some changes. Aside the proposals we were put in seven technical working groups to discuss various issues. The first issue is on the Legal Professions Bill. It has a number of issues so as lawyers, we will study and make appropriate proposals to it,” he said.
The Legal Professions Bill seeks to make an amendment to the Legal Professions Act to provide a framework for the licensing of universities to run Bachelor of Laws programmes.
According to the Bill, there are currently no modalities under which such approval is to be given by the General Legal Council, thus seeking to achieve that.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the UPSA LEGAL PROFESSION CONFERENCE AND MENTORSHIP fair, Prof. Atuguba assured students, parents, and guardians, that the newly formed Conference of Law Deans will work to assuage most of the challenges faced in legal education in Ghana.
