This year’s edition of the JB Danquah Memorial Lecture by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences(GAAS) is set to be held from February 21-23.

This time around, the three-day public lecture series will discuss the legal system – on the topic, ‘Digitalisation and the Future of the Ghana Legal System.’

At 5:30pm each day, individual sub-topics on various perspectives of Ghana’s legal system will be discussed; some of which apparently need change.

Lecture one for instance will treat the access to justice deficit in Ghana. Organisers say the argument will be for a broader concept of access to justice and at the same time, leveraging on digital technologies to create new paths to justice in Ghana. One of such for example, is the removal of restrictions on advertising of legal services and substantial investment in justice-technologies.

Lecture two will explore skills, knowledge, and competencies that legal education institutions must provide to students, to enable them work in a world that is increasingly marked by digitalisation. In addition, it will examine the potential of digital technology to transform the delivery of legal education in Ghana.

And finally, lecture three will study how digital technology challenges the Ghana legal system’s regulatory function. The focus will be on consumer protection, and new working methods organised through digital labour platforms such as Uber and Bolt. It argues for statutory and judicial interventions to protect consumers and platform workers.

“These lectures call for the Ghana legal system to embrace digital technology to advance its functions and goals,” organisers said.

Another event worth looking out for, is the Absa-UPSA Law School quarterly Banking Roundtable.

This 7th roundtable discussion will focus on regulation in the financial sector, digital currency and the future.

It would take place on February 23, at University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
