Lebanese fined GHC 8400 over fake currency possession

The said amount was retrieved from the luggage of the accused during travel procedures at the airport. Officials at the Bank of Ghana who examined the notes are said to have confirmed they were fake.

An Accra Circuit Court has fined 25-year-old Lebanese, Al-Zoubayr Chaaban GHc8,400 after he was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport for possessing an amount of $10,000, found to be fake.

The said amount was retrieved from the luggage of the accused during travel procedures at the airport. 

Prosecutor Chief Inspector Amoah Richard also told the court officials at the Bank of Ghana who examined the notes are said to have confirmed they were fake.  

Charged with possession of a fake currency note contrary to section 18(2) of the Currency Act. 1964 (Act.242), the accused pleaded guilty to the offence.

He was accordingly fined after a mitigation plea from his lawyer, Kwaku Sallah. In default, he may face two years in prison.
