Koforidua Court to hear bail application of Glo Manager charged with defilement on August 3

A bail application, filed by the Eastern Regional Manager of Glo Ghana who has been accused of defiling a 14-year-old JHS student would be heard on August 3, 2021, by the Koforidua Circuit Court “B”.

During his first appearance in court on July 19, 2021, the defense counsel pleaded that the accused, Awoseni Akinyemi, aged 30, be admitted to bail. However, the court presided over by Her Honor Mercy Addei Kotei refused.

A second application was filed on Monday, July 26, 2021, by the defense counsel which is now set to be heard a week before the next adjourned date.

The accused is a Nigerian who reportedly defiled the JHS 2 student at least three times in his Abrewa-Nkwata residence. He is alleged to have given the victim a contraceptive after every sexual episode.

The Prosecuting Officer, Chief Inspector Bernard Annor told the court that the victim resides in Koforidua with her mother while her father works at a fuel station in Tema as the Manager.

The said father received a tip-off that a certain private car had been picking up his daughter nearly every day after school to an unknown destination. Based on this tip-off, he came to Koforidua secretly to investigate.

The accused did not show up on the said day. However, the father was able to retrieve the tablets of Lydia contraceptive from the victim’s bag when he searched.

Upon interrogation, the victim revealed to her father that the accused had told her she was beautiful and wanted to become her friend. This was when he had met her sometime in June 2021 at Koforidua-Asokore.

According to the victim, later that same month, the accused invited her to his house on three separate occasions, where he had unprotected sex with her. Mr. Akinyemi consequently gave her the contraceptive after each sexual encounter to keep her from getting pregnant.

The victim’s father subsequently lodged a complaint at the Eastern Regional Office of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU).

A medical report issued to the victim confirmed the sexual abuse, leading to the arrest of the accused.

Although Mr. Akinyemi admitted the offense, he told the police that the victim had only visited twice and the sexual intercourse was consensual. He said that had only happened once, during the victim’s first visit.

The accused has nonetheless been charged with defilement, according to section 101 (2) of the Criminal Offences Act 29/60 as amended by section 11 of Act 554/98.

The initial bail application was denied because the Prosecuting Officer told the court that the accused had no permanent residence in Koforidua and there was credible intel that he was planning to leave Ghana for Nigeria to visit his wife and children. There was therefore fears that he may jump bail as a result.
