The Chief Justice of the Republic, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has selected eight (8) courts to pilot a shift system beginning March 25, 2024.

This move, according to her, is to help optimize the use of existing resources to reduce the volume of cases before the courts.

The selected courts are; High Court ‘1’ Adentan; High Court ‘2’ Adentan; High Court ‘1’ Amasaman; Circuit Court, Weija; District Court, La; District Court, Teshie; District Court A & B, Madina; and the High Court at Nsawam.

In a circular signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Pamela Koranteng, the Chief Justice further noted that this new system stems from the fact that ‘findings from a physical count of dockets undertaken in all courts nationwide demonstrated that a number of identified courts have huge caseloads, with some in excess of 600 pending cases,” it said in part.

As such, Her Ladyship is optimistic that the court shift system will reduce the backlog of cases in the specified courts, improve accessibility to justice, and enhance the overall effectiveness of the judicial system when implemented.

Per the new system, the courts will thus have two sessions as follows: the morning shift will be from 8:30 am to 1:30 30, while the afternoon session will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 pm.
