The embattled former Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr. Kwabena Opuni has invoked the supervisory jurisdiction of the Supreme Court in his bid to ensure that Justice Clemence Honyenuga is recused from the case, the Supreme Court Judge has revealed.

The Court was scheduled to hear the case on his alleged misappropriation of GHS217million on Friday, June 18, 2021.

However, Justice Honyenuga was met with the petition from Dr. Opuni when the former entered his chambers and was readying himself to commence the hearing.

According to a news report filed by Accra-based Citi News, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa admitted to the court that the state was also unaware of the existence of the petition, nor had any awareness of its content.

Lawyers for Dr. Opuni however conceded knowledge of the petition, though they remain tight-lipped on its contents.

The petition to the Chief Justice is another of several efforts Dr. Opuni has made to ensure that Justice Clemence Honyenuga is replaced as the trial judge in the case.

The hearing has now been adjourned to 29th June 2021, in light of the new petition.

“In view of the application dated 17th of June 2021, sent to the Chief Justice by the First Accused, this case stands adjourned to the 29th of June to await the Chief Justice’s decision,” the court heard.
