The immediate past Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Sophia Akuffo, is part of 11 newly sworn-in fellows of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

She and other fellows were inducted yesterday at the 2021 GAAS Founders week, a four-day programme on the theme “The 1992 Constitution: Fitness For Purpose in the 21st Century.”

The other fellows that were inducted are Prof. Kofi Agyekum, Prof. Martin Odei Ajei, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Prof. Adams Bonlacher Bodomo and Prof. Peter Quartey.

The rest are Prof. Victor Kwame Agyeman, Prof. Regina Appiah-Opong, Prof. Peter Lamptey, Prof. Eric Sampane-Donkor and Dr. Nii Narku Quaynor.

The scholars that were inducted work in areas from linguistics, law, philosophy, african studies, public health and computer science.

Their inclusion in the organisation is expected to enhance the association’s work of public discourse.

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana who spoke on behalf of the inductees said they are yearning to contribute to change.

“I believe we have enough expertise to help the discourses of the Academy and beyond that, to contribute to policy-making and cultural change within our societies,” she said.

The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences is perhaps known for its memorial lecture series. According to the association, its aim is generally to promote the pursuit, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in all branches of the sciences and the humanities.
