The ICC International Court of Arbitration has said it would be offering training to African arbitration lawyers this year, following the announcement to expand its Advanced Arbitration Academies training programme to include Africa and the Middle East.

The one-year training programme offers arbitration practitioners the chance to train as arbitrators.

Having formerly taken place in Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and North America in 2023, the African programme for 2024 would take place in four cities across the continent - in Nairobi, Kenya in May 2024; Dakar, Senegal in September 2024; Casablanca, Morocco in December 2024; and Accra, Ghana in March 2025.

“Tailored for seasoned arbitration practitioners aspiring to become arbitrators, the one-year programme covers key stages of arbitration proceedings from an arbitrator’s perspective. This includes arbitrator appointment, tribunal jurisdiction, case management, provisional remedies, security for costs, evidence, hearing, award and scrutiny, and notification of the award. Limited to 40 participants, the exclusive programme includes assignments, group work and eight in-person, mandatory workshops,” a statement on the announcement said.

The training would be jointly led by Funke Adekoya and Jacob Grierson, both prominent names in the arbitration community.

Applications for African lawyers are open until February 18, 2024.
