The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has reacted to stories that made rounds in the media concerning the alleged sale of his official residence.

At a breakfast meeting, the Speaker of Parliament was reported to have said that his official residence at Cantonment had been sold.

However, he has indicated emphatically that he only said that his official residence was almost sold but was averted by the Lands Commission when the developer got to know the status of the property.

A statement signed by the Director for the Media Relations Department of Parliament states that reactions on the matter by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Works and Housing, and the Lands Commission have not tackled the issue.

It reveals further that all surrounding buildings of the Speaker’s residence have been sold out to private developers who have put up high-rise buildings leaving the Speaker’s own as an island thus endangering his safety.

Additionally, the statement indicates that such an allegation of sale of Parliament lands is not new referring to an incident in 2019 where the official accommodation of a sitting Clerk of the House in Cantonment was sold to a private developer.

The Speaker has thus called for transparency in the ongoing matter and applauded the resolve of the Lands and Natural Resources Minister to investigate the matter.
