Headteacher whose students drowned after working on his farm to reappear before court

However, reports from Accra-based Citi News suggests that the families of the deceased students are requesting that the headmaster be pardoned.

It is expected that the Headmaster of the St. Charles Lwanga Junior High School, Mr. Emmanuel Chingya will reappear before the Tamale District Court today, Monday, December 13, 2021.

He has been charged with manslaughter, following the deaths of nine out of 31 students who died when the canoe they were traveling in capsized. The 31 students had been sent by the headmaster to work on his farm on November 12, 2021.

The court last sat on this case on November 29, 2021, where the prosecution requested for more time to enable it carry out further investigations on the case.

However, reports from Accra-based Citi News suggests that the families of the deceased students are requesting that the headmaster be pardoned.

The spokesperson of the families who spoke to Citi News, Jesse Nyimakan is reported to have stated that the headmaster is presently being dealt with because of the public awareness of the matter, adding that the deaths were an accident.

“We say it’s an accident and nobody predicts an accident. So we are still pleading that if he can be pardoned and reinstated to his work, we would be happy. That is our plea. So we are calling on the law enforcers to temper justice with mercy.”

The Court, presided over by His Worship Amadu Issifu is nonetheless expected to hear the case from the prosecution, after granting their prayer for extended time for further investigations.
