A Government directive issued through a private mail from the Ministry of Roads and Highways has indicated that no new road contract across the country should be awarded until further notice.

The mail is issued to all Regional Directors of the Department of Urban Roads and it instructs that all MMDAs be informed of its implications.

“Management has been instructed not to award any routine or periodic Maintenance Contracts until further notice.

You are therefore to take note and abide by this directive. Kindly inform all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies within your jurisdiction to obey this directive from the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

“As a consequence, any Payment Certificate received for a new contract shall be returned immediately to its original source,” the mail indicates.

Meanwhile, Accra-based 3news has reported that the MP for Adaklu who is a Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Kwame Agbodza has noted that the directive is unacceptable.

The report indicates that the legislator is not pleased with the timing of the directive, given that public outrage and incensed agitations over the deplorable state of roads across the country and the advent of rain in this season should have compelled the government to instead direct otherwise.

According to him, the government should rather be looking to speed the maintenance of roads instead of halting such processes.
