The Supreme Court of Ghana has dismissed a motion filed by Anas Aremeyaw Anas against a decision of the High Court that sat in a defamation case against Ken Agyepong.

However in its ruling today, the 5-member panel of the court in a 3:2 majority decision dismissed the action.

Anas filed the suit in June 2018 on the claims of the tortious offense of libel, allegedly committed against him by the defendant, by reason of which he claimed his name, reputation, and image had been critically damaged.

However, a High Court last year dismissed the action saying that Anas is a blackmailer, an extortionist, corrupt, and a criminal.

Subsequently, Anas invoked the supervisory jurisdiction of the Supreme Court seeking to quash the High Court judgment.

He argued among others that the sitting judge acted beyond his jurisdiction by his use of certain words on the applicant in the judgment.

However, when the case was called today, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo who led the panel thought otherwise thus dismissing the motion.

Meanwhile, the apex court has announced that its full reasoning will be ready on Monday, March 4, 2024.
