Ghana School of launches 6th volume of the student Journal

The Ghana School of Law launched the 6th volume of the student Journal on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at 1 pm. Already, five (5) volumes of the Journal have been released since 2010.

An editor of the current (6th) volume, Shafic Kwabena Osman indicated to Dennislaw News that there was a break between the fourth and fifth volumes but was revived last year.

“So this is the 6th Volume. It has not been a yearly thing. Some volumes have been released since 2009/2010 but there was a break between the fourth and fifth volumes so last year, it was revived,” he noted.

The 6th Volume of the GSL student Journal was launched in partnership with the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana School of Law and coincided with the SRC’s handing over.

In attendance at the launch was the Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwasi Prempeh Eck.

About the 6th volume of the GSL Student Journal

According to Mr. Osman, the current edition has eleven (11) articles and a special entry from the Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, and another legal practitioner.

The Journal further has a special tribute to the Late Samuel Marful-Sau, former Supreme Court Judge.

“So we have eleven(11) entries or submissions in all. There is a special entry from the Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof.Raymond Atuguba, and another lawyer by name of Kobby Afari,”

“There is also a tribute to the late Samuel Marful-Sau, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana,” he added.

Goals of the GSL student Journal

The goal of the 6th Volume of the Journal, according to Mr. Shafic Osman, is to keep the Journal system revived after the long break between the fourth and fifth editions and get students to contribute to areas of the law that are very relevant and those that people have not yet written on.

“For instance, there is a submission on Consumer protection Law,  one on Special Intelligence, and others. So we did this to discuss these issues,” he noted.

Impact of the GSL Student Journal

Additionally, Mr. Shafic stated that the student Journal has over the years helped Law students especially in Legal Research and Law Scholarship.

“I know of last year’s volume. Now I think the biggest thing for me is that it has kept students interested in legal research… because the role of a journal is to contribute to legal scholarship in the country,”

“We have a situation where as a result of it being revived last year, we have more people submitting this year and already, we are getting increased excitement about next year’s volume so we hope to sustain the interest in legal scholarship,” he indicated.

Future of the GSL student Journal

 The editor hinted at plans to have a dedicated website for the journals since it is quite hard getting access to the previous journals. This has also become necessary because previous administrations either produced hardcopies or softcopies without specific work being put into making the journals go viral or accessible enough.

“We are looking at doing two things. Firstly, increase the number of people who will get access to it and secondly, have a dedicated website where previous and future journals can be accessed.”

“We are hoping to do a tour of a sort to some lawyers and some practitioners in the hope of getting them to know about the Journal and hopefully, get support from them for future journals as well as get entries from them,” he concluded.
