The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has indicated its commitment to push a National Policy Initiative to ensure that everyone who gets into Ghana’s prison, comes out with a skill.

According to the Association, this is one of the surest ways to deal with and reduce the rate of recidivism in the country’s prisons.

Addressing the media after donating to the Male section of the Nsawam Prison on June 17, 2023, the President of the Association, Yaw Acheampong Boafo applauded the University of Cape Coast for Partnering with the Prison to give skill training to the inmates.

National Youth Orientation

Mr Boafo noted that it is time for the nation to deal with crime from its various base or causes thus mentioning the need for a national orientation for the youth to enlighten them on crime in its ramifications.

He also called for churches and religious bodies and Associations to educate members to live within their means.

In all, the GBA donated assorted food items such as rice, gari, oil, drinks, and more. In addition, an undisclosed amount of money was donated to support the registration of this year’s BECE candidates at the prison.

In attendance at the event also were the National Vice President, Greater Accra Regional Bar President, the National Public Relations Officer, and others.

Background

In 2021, the National Executive Committee of the Ghana Bar Association decided to give back to the society.

As such, the female counterparts adopted the female section of the Nsawam Prisons while the males took the male section thereby making donations to them during Mother’s and Father’s Days respectively.

Last year, the GBA donated to the Veterans Association during Father’s Day and following that, donated to the Nsawam prison this year.
