The Greater Accra Regional Branch of the Ghana Bar Association has condemned the arrest, detention, and manhandling of one of their members, Richmond Rockson Esq. during the recently organized #occupyjulorbihousedemo.
They note that this incident occurred specifically on Thursday, September 21 at the headquarters of the Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service while their colleague was discharging his duties to a number of the arrested demonstrators.
A statement signed by the Regional Secretary, Aurelius Awuku has revealed that subsequent to receiving the news of the arrest and manhandling, the Association verified and thus received a confirmation that indeed the incident occurred.
The Association therefore has described the conduct of the ‘officers of the Ghana Police Service as a breach of the 1992 Constitution and all other related laws that guarantee the right to work and freedom of movement.”
It has announced also its resolve to pursue the matter further with the National Executive Committee of the GBA for the appropriate action to be taken.
The Regional GBA has meanwhile assured all its members of its unflinching support to them thus encouraging them to take all lawful steps to defend the rights of all persons guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution and the other laws of Ghana.
