The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Madam Kathleen Addy is not happy about the recent botched attempt to get the country’s MMDCEs elected.

According to her, such a proposal, if seen through, will rather help deal with a myriad of problems confronting the nation.

“For instance, this last botched attempt at getting our heads of Local Government elected was a great source of pain to me”

Because to be honest, if we can accomplish that, we will solve a lot of our problems. So for instance, as soon as we are having our heads of Local government elected, it means that the president’s power of selecting them is immediately gone meaning that the concentration of power in the presidency has been addressed to a point.”

Following a proposal made by the current government, a referendum was scheduled to be held in Ghana in December 2019 for approval of the election of MMDCEs thus allowing political parties to be involved in the local processes.

However, following a withdrawal by the opposition NDC, which was a major stakeholder in the process, the referendum was canceled.

Speaking at the GIMPA Law Theory and Practice Seminar Series, the Chairperson called on students to be active in their roles as citizens in getting political parties to make the needed commitments while getting them to deliver on the same.

Touching on the role of the NCCE, Ms. Addy reiterated the Commission’s serious problem with funding noting that the framers of the constitution made an assumption relative to the release of funds from the government to her outfits, which successive governments have not complied effectively with.

The above notwithstanding, she added that the NCCE continues to contribute effectively to good governance and organize programs such as social auditing, Citizens week, Constitution game, Civil challenges, etc.
