Ghana’s Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has expressed surprise over the decision of the Achimota School to appeal against the High Court’s ruling on the two Rastafarian students.

Dr. Yaw Adutwum noted, in his remarks on Accra-based Metro TV that such a move was surprising. He further urged the school to “chill”, adding that, “I’m waiting for a full briefing of the Attorney General who I commend for going to court, so nobody can preempt us.”

The High Court had on Monday ruled that the school’s refusal to admit the students because of their dreadlocks constituted a violation of their human rights, right to education, and personal dignity.

However, the Governing Board in a statement released on Tuesday evening indicated that the board had directed its lawyers to appeal against the ruling.
