EC: We’re not creating new constituencies

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has denied social media reports that it is creating new constituencies in anticipation of the 2024 elections.
Dr Bossman Asare, the deputy chairman of the EC in charge of corporate services. told the Ghana News Agency there is no plan to create 25 more constituencies.
He was responding to a story circulating on social media claiming that the Commission has created 25 constituencies across eight regions ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Dr Asare said that although the EC has a constitutional mandate to review Ghana’s constituencies after the publication of the census figures, it has not done so.
He said the creation of constituencies is governed strictly by the constitution and must go through certain processes.
“Clause 5 of Article 47 of the 1992 constitution authorised the Electoral Commission to review the division of Ghana into constituencies at intervals of not less than seven years, or within 12 months after the publication of the enumeration figures after the holding of a census of the population of Ghana, whichever is earlier and may, as a result, alter the constituencies,” he said.
