The Akro Secondary Technical School in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region has been temporarily shut down after students assaulted two suspected thieves who invaded the girls’ dormitory on Friday, January 21.

The school has therefore been closed down until February 7, 2022.

It also means the ongoing end of semester examination has been affected.

The Eastern Regional Education Directorate says the decision to shut down the school is to prevent reprisal attacks.

“Given the situation, a good number of the students have already left although we are yet to complete the academic year of 2021. We started with the examinations but under the current situation, it will not be safe to keep them so we have asked that they go back home so that if everything normalizes we come back safe and continue to finish the academic year,” Emmanuel Acheampong, the Eastern Regional Education Directorate said.

Hon. Simon Kweku Tetteh, MCE for Lower Manya Krobo Municipality who is the Chairman of MUSEC also said stakeholders will use the period of the closure to resolve the feud and restore harmony in the community.

According to reports, some students of the school on Friday physically assaulted two persons who invaded their campus until they fell unconscious.

The suspects, Sackitey Emmanuel Kpabitey and Odoi Solomon, were rushed to the hospital by police officers.

One of the suspects who was admitted at the St. Martin’s De Porres hospital for treatment, however, died. The other suspect who survived the attacks is in critical condition at the same facility.

Subsequently, the armed residents, who claim the suspects were innocent, stormed the school premises and attacked some of the students amidst pelting of stones.

The headmaster of the school, Charles Osom Baah, however said the students were compelled to unleash the attacks on them after the first suspect threatened to invite some townsfolks to attack them.
