The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, Ministry of Education, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to immediately start negotiations with striking teacher unions.

In a letter dated July 4, 2022, it asked government agencies to negotiate a settlement within seven days and present a report accordingly.

Teacher unions yesterday, declared a nationwide strike over what they say is the government’s failure to pay them a 20% Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA).

“You are hereby requested to engage the aggrieved teacher unions immediately upon receipt of this correspondence to negotiate settlement of their grievances within seven days and furnish the Commission with a report upon completion.

With this intervention, we urge the teacher unions to rescind the decision and discontinue the strike to pave way for the process of engagement to ensue. By copies of this letter, the teacher unions – GNAT, NAGRAT, TEWU, CCT-GH – are accordingly advised,” the Labour Commission said in its letter.
