The Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame has denounced the creeping behaviour and tendency of law students to use traditional, social media to publish obscene and vitriolic materials.

He noted that such conducts bring the law school and legal profession in general into disrepute.

“I will take this opportunity to denounce the tenancy of law students to use traditional and social media to publish obscene materials, vitriolic and other materials which clearly brings the law school and the profession in general  into disrepute.”

Speaking at the induction ceremony of the Director of Legal Education and for the Ghana School of Law in Accra yesterday, Mr Dame thus noted that ‘such conduct is dishonourable and should be met with the appropriate disciplinary sanctions.’

The ceremony, which is the first of its kind for a Director of Legal education and the school, was attended by a high-powered delegation led by the Chief Justice, members of the General Legal Council, the Judicial Secretary, Justices of the Superior Courts, lawyers, lecturers of the GSL, students etc.

Additionally, the AG emphasized the need for the nation to provide sound academic training for lawyers of this generation and generations yet to come and thus cannot gamble with its future by sacrificing the time-honoured virtues of the legal profession in the education of its law students.

Also, Mr Dame charged the newly inducted Director to cooperate with the General Legal Council to solve the many challenges bedevilling the school, especially the pressing physical accommodation issue.

Speaking on the duty placed globally on ethical training and values in legal education, he thus called for cooperation between the Bench, Bar and Faculty in ensuring that the same permeate the entire educational experience beginning with the first hour of the first day in law school.

Furthermore, Mr Dame expressed disgust for the recent leakage of entrance examination questions at the Ghana School of Law describing it as ‘most unwarranted and deplorable’ and thus calling for the permanent barring of anyone caught dabbling in such an act.
